title: "Partially Fulfilled Orders on Shopify: What to Check"
description: "Understand partially fulfilled orders on Shopify before sending another parcel. Check remaining quantities, tracking, payment, and the customer's next update."

A partially fulfilled order on Shopify has some items fulfilled and others still outstanding. It does not mean the customer has received everything, paid only part of the bill, or received a refund. For a merchant, the next task is to identify the remaining item quantities and their fulfillment owner, then check shipment evidence before sending another parcel or promising a delivery date.

One order can produce two packages. One package can arrive while another item is still waiting for stock. The order badge summarizes that work; it cannot tell you what is inside each parcel. Read the item and shipment records together.

## What partially fulfilled orders on Shopify mean

[Shopify's order-status reference](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/orders/manage-orders/order-status) defines **Partially fulfilled** as fulfilling part of the items in an order. Payment, fulfillment, order, and return statuses are separate. A paid order can therefore remain partially fulfilled without any contradiction.

Keep these questions separate when checking a purchase:

- **Has the customer paid?** Inspect payment status and payment records. They do not establish whether every item has shipped.
- **Which quantities have been fulfilled?** Inspect item quantities and fulfillment records. They do not establish whether the carrier delivered the parcel.
- **Where is this package?** Inspect tracking and carrier events. They do not establish whether another package is still owed.
- **What remains to be done?** Inspect outstanding items, holds, and the assigned service. They do not establish a guaranteed delivery date.

Do not use a fulfillment badge as proof of delivery. Shopify documents that purchasing and printing a shipping label marks an order as fulfilled. That is not the same evidence as a carrier delivery event. It also allows a tracking number to be added after fulfillment, so a missing number alone does not prove that nothing happened.

## Why an order can be fulfilled in parts

Partial fulfillment is not always an error or a stock shortage. [Shopify's individual-fulfillment guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/fulfilling-orders/single-fulfillment#partially-fulfill-order-manually) distinguishes orders split before they reach the merchant from orders the merchant chooses to split.

Checkout can separate items that cannot ship together. Stock may be spread across locations. Preorder or subscription items can have different fulfillment timing, and an order can combine shipping with in-store pickup. Alternatively, a merchant may send available items now and leave an unavailable item for a later parcel.

Consider an illustrative order containing two shirts and one mug. The first fulfillment contains one shirt and the mug. The remaining obligation is **one shirt**, not another copy of the original order. If the first parcel arrives, that confirms delivery of those contents; it does not close the remaining shirt's fulfillment.

The same distinction matters when a supplier sends status updates. An event about one shipment must not be read as completion of the whole purchase. Runner's source includes a split-order regression scenario that preserves partial fulfillment when only one shipment is delivered. That is a safeguard against overstating completion, not a promise that every supplier or store uses identical status labels.

## Check remaining quantities before the next action

Start with a reconciliation, not a status change. For each product variant, compare the quantity ordered with the quantities in existing fulfillments and any later order adjustments. Record which items still need work and which service or location owns them.

Use this checklist before dispatching anything:

1. Match the order, product variants, quantities, and delivery address to the customer request.
2. Read every fulfillment, not just the first package with a tracking number.
3. Check outstanding items for holds, future fulfillment dates, unavailable stock, or a third-party service assignment.
4. Confirm which quantities the next parcel will contain. Do not repeat quantities already dispatched just to clear the badge.
5. Inspect the payment state separately and follow the store's approved payment and fraud-review process.
6. After a change, verify the updated record before submitting it again.

Shopify says manual partial fulfillment requires automatic fulfillment to be deactivated. It also states that a third-party fulfillment service controls the status of orders assigned to it. Use the current [Shopify fulfillment instructions](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/fulfilling-orders/single-fulfillment) for the applicable action rather than assuming a manual button overrides the supplier.

For Runner stores, the [Orders guide](https://www.runnerai.com/docs/en/guides/store-operations/orders) owns the supported controls and prerequisites. Runner keeps payment and fulfillment states separate, too. Do not transfer Shopify's quantity-selection procedure to Runner by analogy. A status shared by two platforms does not prove that their controls have the same scope. ## Tell the customer what this shipment includes

An update should answer what is coming now, what remains, and when the customer will hear from you again. Shopify notes that separate fulfillments can generate separate shipping confirmation emails. Check the contents and tracking associated with each message so that one confirmation does not imply the whole order is complete.

Here is an illustrative message for the shirts-and-mug example:

> Your first parcel contains one shirt and your mug. One shirt remains unshipped. We are checking its availability and will update you by Thursday. The tracking link in this message applies only to the first parcel.

Use a dispatch or delivery date only when the responsible service has confirmed it. If timing is unknown, give a real follow-up commitment rather than inventing an arrival estimate. Our [ecommerce customer-support playbook](./ecommerce-customer-support) covers the wider handoff between support and operations.

If the customer no longer wants the outstanding item, treat cancellation and money movement as separate decisions. Check the supplier before assuming a cancellation will stop production or dispatch. Shopify explicitly warns that canceling a fulfillment in its admin does not stop a fulfillment already in progress. Read our [order-level refund explainer](./order-level-refund) for the separate financial question; issuing money back is not proof that a package has been stopped.

## Related questions

### Does partially fulfilled mean partially paid?

No. Fulfillment describes the item work, while payment describes the money. A customer can pay the full amount before the merchant fulfills any items. Check both records before acting. Neither a paid badge nor a tracking number tells you whether all ordered quantities have been completed.

### Why is the order still partially fulfilled after a delivery?

The delivery may cover only one fulfillment. Compare the delivered parcel's contents with the remaining item quantities and other fulfillment records. If every outstanding quantity appears accounted for, investigate the platform or service records rather than sending another package. A delivered shipment and a completed order are different units of work.

### Should I mark the entire order fulfilled to remove the badge?

No. Record the quantities actually being fulfilled and verify what remains. Clearing a badge is not a reason to create a record that misstates the order. Check the action's scope first, especially across different platforms, and use the responsible fulfillment service's procedure when that service controls the work.

### Can a partially fulfilled order include pickup items?

Yes. Shopify documents orders combining shipped items and in-store pickup items, with fulfillments grouped by location and delivery method. Pickup follows its own ready-for-pickup and picked-up flow. For partially fulfilled orders on Shopify, inspect each group's delivery method before assuming every remaining item needs a shipping label.
